Sharon starts filming “Mano Po 6: My Mother”

Megastar Sharon Cuneta finally faced the cameras for the first shooting day of her Regal Films debut, “Mano Po 6: My Mother,” with Joel Lamangan at the helm.

Playing a Chinese matriarch whose desire is to get back her daughter at all cost, Sharon showed up at Hotel Sofitel with much excitement and enthusiasm for her latest big screen project. The movie is intended as an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) this December.

“I am really looking forward to doing this ‘Mano Po’ movie,” says Sharon, whose first filmfest entry was “Crying Ladies” in 2003, directed by Mark Meily. “I’ve done 56 movies and this is my first for Regal. I’m happy to become a Regal baby.”

Written by Roy Iglesias, “Mano Po 6” is touted as the biggest and most expensive franchise of the “Mano Po” series that started in 2002.

Producer Lily Monteverde reveals it’s a dream come true for her to finally get Sharon to do a movie for Regal. “I kept on saying that before I retire, I want to get Sharon to make a Regal movie,” Mother Lily admits. “I’m really happy that she said yes to me.”

Sharon, who was last seen in the comedy flick,  “Best Friends Forever,” with Ai-Ai de las Alas early this year, is happy to return to the drama genre with “Mano Po 6.” She reunites onscreen with her favorite leading man, Christopher de Leon, who plays her husband in the movie.

“Mother Lily was offering me to do a movie for Regal since the late nineties,” Sharon discloses. “When I got back from Boston after two miscarriages, Mother Lily was the first one to offer me a film project even if I was overweight. Since then, they were just really waiting for the right material to present to me. I am so thankful for Mother and Roselle (Monteverde-Teo). They are really both maalaga. You cannot ask for anything more because they will give it to you."

With “Mano Po 6,” Sharon joins the prestigious roster of premier actresses that starred in the award-winning Regal Films franchise. The list includes Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Maricel Soriano, Susan Roces, Kris Aquino, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Judy Ann Santos and Angel Locsin.

“The fact that great actresses were my predecessors in ‘Mano Po’ adds up to the pressure of working in this movie,” says Sharon. “The public might have too high expectations from me. But I vow to give my best for this project.”

Is she aspiring for a best actress award from the MMFF for “Mano Po 6”?

“Who doesn’t want to win best actress?,” Sharon maintains. “But I don’t want to go to work with the thought that I want to win an award for this movie. It’s nice to be able to do a memorable film that will be remembered years from now.”

Just like her predecessors, Sharon will have to learn Chinese to deliver some of her lines in the movie. She will work with a language coach on the set to help her with her dialogue. The megastar is also slated to fly to Beijing in mid-November to shoot scenes for the movie. She is said to wear a total of 70 outfits throughout the film.

“During my last trip to Hong Kong, I bought a lot of Shanghai Tang wardrobe for this film,” Sharon shares. “Even the pajamas and wraps that I will use will be authentic Chinese attire. I really want to prepare for my role.”

Sharon is also pleased to work again with director Joel Lamangan, who handled her in films like “Ngayon at Kailanman,” “Magkapatid” and “Walang Kapalit.”

“It’s nice to work again with Direk Joel,” asserts Sharon. “Since I was in my twenties, I’ve been working with him already. I’m very comfortable with him.”

“Mano Po  6” boasts a powerhouse supporting cast that also includes Zsa Zsa Padilla in a villain role, Dennis Trillo, Heart Evangelista, Boots Anson Roa, Ciara Sotto and Kris Aquino in a special role as Sharon’s best friend.
